This book had a really awesome twist on the classic Dracula tale, however I feel as if the author dropped the ball a bit. I get that Ruxandra's tale takes time to tell, but I was expecting her to be a bit more badass. She could've conquered towns and villages and accepted her inner animal/evil. The first chapter alone with the naughty trio showed that she wasn't purely religious and already had a bad streak in her, then she was changed and she went backwards into this ridiculous religious zealot to atone for her sins. I just thought it was a bit backwards. For me, this book was just "meh". The timeline was drawn out and I kept reading in the hopes that she would get out of her cave and start making a life for herself and coming into her own as this new, horrifically wonderful monster.Especially after reading this author's previous two books, I was expecting something extremely powerful and wretched and naughty and ...more... I think this book really has some potential. And if the author continues with the story then he really needs to let Ruxandra come into her own and dominate.

Princess Dracula turns everything upside down, and yet keeps it all the same. It's not Vlad, but his daughter who gains the power of a demon.
The influences of modern works, White Wolf games, recent Dracula movies, and older ones, such as Anne Rice, all show through. There's not much original here, but it's well executed fun, full of hooks that keep you reading. It's hard to put down, even if you can see a lot of what's coming.
As genre fiction goes, it's a great execution, short, but full of action. The central character is a bit generic, despite some early attempts to develop depth in her. It doesn't really matter, because if you've read any Anne Rice vampire story, all your favourite features are here.
If there's a weakness, it's too short, and there aren't quite enough characters for the protagonist to interact with. We don't get to see enough of her powers, or at least enough of their range, and there isn't much feeling of a broader plot developing. It's a little too evident that this is a series intro, and the real meat is being held back until later.
It's a pity that there isn't more here, because the sequel draws a line under this book, and (spoiler) jumps forward quite a few years. I would have liked to see more of this (series?) set in the medieval period. Yes, it feels like a series is definitely the aim here, and that does undercut this a little.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed this considerably. It's short enough for its flaws not to matter, and the sequel steps things up considerably.
Against my better judgement I bought and downloaded this book.
Mr. Kennedy is basically a good writer. He grabs the readers attention and holds it and keeps moving the story without slowing down. Even at his fast pace one can get to know the character quite well and even feel for her. I think this last reason is why I continued reading the book.
In spite of Mr. Kennedy 's great writing ability I was severely let down. My let down was not because the story is graphically violent with some perverted sex, but because of the downer and pointless ending.
I don't mind a book or movie with a downer or sad ending if it has a point to make. If there was a point to it I missed it. I wasted my time reading it.
I will not be reading any more of John Patrick Kennedy's books.

For the most part, I enjoyed this book; it was an interesting take on vampires and the whole Dracula story. The author's descriptions were probably the strongest point, every scene vividly described and easy to visualize.
The only downside for me was that there wasn't much plot, when you got down to it. I love a good character study, but I found myself skimming a lot of paragraphs because everything started feeling really repetitive.
However, the book was enjoyable enough, with a satisfying ending that left room for more, and I am looking forward to the sequel.

After spending ten years at a convent, Princess Ruxandara is finally reunited with her father, Lord Vlad Dracula. However, the reason behind this reunion is quickly revealed to not be what the Princess expected. Her father hopes to sacrifice her to a demon in exchange for more power. Lord Dracula's plans go awry though, and Ruxandra finds herself changed, with horrifying consequences.
The majority of Princess Dracula is spent detailing the struggles the young woman must now face as part of her transition from royalty to living dead. We accompany her while she learns to hunt (which took up way too much of the book if you ask me) and easily predict the doomed fates of those she comes into contact with. Ultimately, as her failure to contain control over her new primal instinct grows and she experiences a disastrous (and overly dramatic) romance, Ruxandra is left completely hopeless. The book ends by doing a bit of a time jump to set up the second installment of the series by introducing someone I expect will be very important, Elizabeth Bathory.
For the most part, this was an enjoyable read. However, the hunting scenes had so much detail, to the point of being a little too much for me personally. There would be a little development in the story...and then it would go back to hunting. I get it...she needs to feed, but the amount of time spent on just this aspect of the story makes it start to feel like filler. I was also a little in shock at how incredibly cheesy the sex scene was. It was like I put down Princess Dracula and was suddenly reading a Harlequin romance from the 80's or 90's. One line in particular, "She didn't care about being a lady anymore.", somehow left me speechless while laughing hysterically in my head at the same time. Seeing as we start in book one with Vlad Dracula (Vlad the Impaler) and book two will have Elizabeth Bathory, it seems that each book will see Ruxandra's interactions with historical figures connected to the vampire mythology.
